SOAL to Create Black Cemetery Historic Preservation Plan
SOAL: SavingOurAncestorsLegacy is thrilled to announce the creation of the first comprehensive Historic Preservation Plan for the future of Lincoln Cemetery. Historic preservation planning is an often-overlooked step in historic Black Cemetery conservation and maintenance. In this groundbreaking initiative SOAL teams up with industry experts to achieve the latest milestone in the ongoing efforts to restore and preserve the oldest extant African American burial grounds in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
On Monday, September 18th, SOAL will host a gathering of conservation specialists, industry experts, descendants, and community stakeholders to develop the Lincoln Cemetery Conservation Plan. Invited experts include Richard Grubb & Associates, as well as, representation from our sponsor organizations—Preservation Pennsylvania, and PA Hallowed Grounds. The event will be held at Lincoln Cemetery, located at 201 South 30th Street in Penbrook at 1pm–No need to sign up!
Industry Experts to Create Lincoln Cemetery Historic Preservation Plan
Black Cemetery Historic Preservation Plan: A New Chapter at Harrisburg’s Lincoln Cemetery
Earlier this summer, SOAL: SavingOurAncestorsLegacy received a distinguished grant as part of the Pennsylvania African American Cemetery Project, funded by the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund of National Trust for Historic Preservation and The 1772 Foundation.
Our Cemetery Preservation Plan will serve as a blueprint for the revitalization of Lincoln Cemetery. This endeavor stems from SOAL’s mission to restore not only the physical space but also the rich history and cultural significance of the burial grounds. Developed with input from industry leaders and community stakeholders, the plan will clearly communicate the way we approach cemetery conservation.
