🌟 Char Hanks: SOAL Community Lincoln Cemetery Volunteer Spotlight 🌟

Char has been a part of the SOAL Community from day #1! In this post we shine the Lincoln Cemetery volunteer spotlight on Char Hanks, who has been a member of SavingOurAncestorsLegacy since the very first SOAL restoration event at Harrisburg’s Lincoln Cemetery in July 2021. Char is our ever-vigilant Susquehanna Township neighbor–her dedication to the community is only surpassed by her love for dogs!

From the outset of our SOAL journey, Char has stood as a beacon of dedication, passion, and heartfelt care. Living in the vicinity, she’s been an observant guardian of the historic Lincoln Cemetery, expressing her concerns long before our involvement.

Despite an encounter with Sumac that now demands her careful navigation of the grounds, Char remains unwavering. She’s the kind soul ensuring our hardworking volunteers are never short on hydration or energy-boosting snacks. Beyond the physical needs, she extends her warmth by consistently checking in and caring for the team’s well-being.

Char’s commitment goes beyond mere involvement. She took it upon herself as a pivotal task to clear away encroaching brush from sunken headstones, revealing the stories and memories buried beneath. An aspect dear to her heart is the recognition and honor of our veterans. Over the past two years, she’s meticulously documented every veteran’s headstone, an endeavor that has only grown in magnitude as more hidden markers have been uncovered across the cemetery’s expansive seven acres.

A beautiful aspect of Char’s bond with our mission is her connection to Appa, our vigilant Old English Mastiff. As the guardian, groundhog hunter, and adept fox chaser of the cemetery, Appa found an instant friend in Char, a testament to her genuine, nurturing spirit.

Her welcoming nature played a pivotal role in our integration into the neighborhood, from offering her premises as a delivery hub for SOAL’s cemetery restoration supplies to gifting essential household items. And, whenever Appa finds himself in need of first aid, Char is the go-to person with a ready solution.

Char, your contribution goes beyond physical efforts; you bring soul to our mission. Your passion for honoring the past, especially our veterans, and nurturing the present community, ensures a legacy for the future. We’re eternally grateful. 💛
