1961 William Penn Scholarship Recipients
Black Family History Gems: 1961 Photos of William Penn Scholarship Recipients
Black Family History Gems: Earlier today, I was searching for news about a Harrisburg, PA native who went on to Bennett College, I found this awesome article in the High Point Enterprise (published in Greensboro, NC), it lists 21 William Penn Scholarship Recipients who are graduating from William Penn High School! The article includes their graduation photos and a short biographical sketch of each student. Unfortunately, I totally missed that this is William Penn High School in “which served African-American students in High Point, North Carolina from the 1890s through its closure in 1968.”
You never know where a bit of research will take you! So, I am sharing it with you! Not surprisingly, In 1961, many of these Black high school grads were HBCU bound… (Check out the magnificent William Penn High School website: it has archives, tons of photos, alumni information, and oral histories!)
The images and text below include my corrected OCR transcription from the article featured in this historic newspaper from High Point, North Carolina (it is very likely that I overlooked something in correcting the OCR):
