    Notes:

Elisha Marshall was born February 10, 1838 in Winchester, Virginia, a slave, and he escaped from slavery during a war incident when General Nathaniel P. Banks of the Union Army retreated from the area. Elisha arrived and settled in Harrisburg in 1862 where he met Harriet McClintock, who was active in the Underground Railroad and shortly there after they were lawfully joined in marriage on June 9, 1864 in the Wesley Union A. M. E. Zion Church. Elisha remained in Harrisburg as an active citizen until his death in 1903.
After arriving in Harrisburg, he worked as a coachman for the Maurice Charles Eby family for nearly four years while his brother (Henry) managed the Eby’s farmland and on February 16, 1865, he enlisted in Union Army as a volunteer and as a substitute for son of the Eby’s family. This substitute practice frequently paid as much as $400 and it became popular for rich families whose son’s were to be drafted. Elisha took his basic training near Philadelphia and served in the 24th Infantry, Company D, United States Colored Troop (USCT) as a private. As fate would have it the EBY'S son died of typhoid fever after Elisha had completed his basic training in Philadelphia and went south with the determination to free slaves and eventually fought in the Battle of Petersburg. His name is listed as part of the African American Civil War Memorial, plaque number B-40, in Washington, District of Columbia at the corner of Vermont Avenue, 10th St, and U Street NW.
At he conclusion of the war Elisha was discharged from service October 1, 1865 in Richmond, Virginia. His discharged papers indicated he was twenty-six years of age and had an eye injury possibly from a gun blast, he eventually lost sight in is second eye which help contribute to his death July 4, 1903.
Elisha was also an active member of Wesley A. M. E. Zion Church from 1862 until his death, being a trustee for many years, and a member of the building committee. He was a charter member of Armstead Roman Lodge No. XXX of Old Fellows, and a charter member of Chosen Friends Lodge No. 43, and a member of the Accepted Masons.
Elisha Marshall was survived by his wife, Harriet, a daughter Ella who was married to Professor Morris H. Layton, a son William Howard Marshall, two brothers, Alexander and John G. B., and numerous nieces and nephews.
