Notes: Elisha Marshall was born February 10, 1838 in Winchester, Virginia, a slave, and he escaped from slavery during a war incident when General Nathaniel P. Banks of the Union Army retreated from the area. Elisha arrived and settled in Harrisburg in 1862 where he met Harriet McClintock, who was active in the Underground Railroad and shortly there after they were lawfully joined in marriage on June 9, 1864 in the Wesley Union A. M. E. Zion Church. Elisha remained in Harrisburg as an active citizen until his death in 1903. Elisha married Harriet McClintock on 9 Jun 1864. Notes: The Rev. Dr. William H. Marshall was born in Harrisburg on January 1, 1866 to Elisha B. Marshall and Harriet McClintock Marshall. At a young age, William showed an interest in the work of the church and became active in the Wesley AME Zion Church. He was one of the first two black males to graduate from a Harrisburg High School in 1883. In 1884, many prominent citizens petitioned the school board thereby requesting his appointment as a teacher, shortly thereafter Marshall began teaching at the Wickersham and Calder Buildings (teaching and serving as a principal for twenty-nine years where black children attended classes). In the Harrisburg School District's directory for the 1910-1911 school year identified William H. Marshall as Principal of Calder Building (Sixth Ward)). William married Mary L "Bessie" Dennie in 1887. Mary (daughter of Alexander William Dennee and Annie Francis Johnson) was born on 25 Jan 1856 in Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 20 Jun 1917 in Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania, USA; was buried in 201 South 30th street, Penbrook, Dauphin, Pennsylvania, USA.
