"George W. Bell, a well-known colored man, a resident of Harrisburg for twenty-five years, died at his residence, No. 131 Short street, from paralysis.
The deceased was in the employ of W. O. Hickok & Co. for over twenty years until a short period previous to his illness, when he was engaged as one of the janitors at the Pennsylvania railroad station.
He was a soldier in the late war of the rebellion, and served as private in Co. D, 24th U. S. Colored Troops. He was also a comrade of D. R. Stevens Post, No. 520, G.A.R., a member of Susquehanna Lodge, No. 2,573, G.U.O.O.F., and Paxton Lodge, No. 16, F.A.M.
He leaves a widow and three children to mourn his loss.
Funeral services will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 P.M. at the Bethel A.M.E. church, Short street. The deceased was a consistent Christian and an active member of the above church."

"The following is courtesy of Dennis Brandt:
In 1860 or thereabout, he was a furnace man apparently living somewhere in Pennsylvania, possibly the eastern sector, although he is not found with assurance in that census. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair, black eyes, and a black complexion.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five and mustered into federal service at Norristown, Montgomery County, February 16, 1865, as a private with Co. D, 24th U.S. Colored Troops, and honorably discharged with his company October 1, 1865.
He married Sarah J. lnu. and fathered Alice J. (b. 07/04/71 - married a Logan), Eva (b. @1878), and Edward (b. 12/??/79), Given his stated age at enlistment, the 1843 birth year is questionable."
