In Response To: Re: Slaves named in Caroline County, VA wills (Gail)

You are so welcome, Gail! I'll keep looking for connections between Taliaferro/Tolliver and Mathews/Matthews families in Port Royal. I don't have the Caroline County death record book that you mentioned.

I'm still trying to determine the exact date or year of death for Nancy Taliaferro, born about 1858-1860 in Virginia. Her maiden name may be Dudley, as I believe she is a child of Preston Dudley and Sarah "Sally" Reynolds, who were former slaves of Gideon Flippo and Philip Samuel. In 1870 Nancy Dudley was counted in the Caroline County household of Mattie Samuel. Nancy (Dudley?) Taliaferro was the first wife of Walker Taliaferro (b. 1854). Their children were Julia (b. 1876), Lula (b. 1885), and Henry (b. 1888). Nancy's husband Walker's parents are Walker and Patsy Taliaferro/Tolliver of Caroline County.

I'm wondering if Nancy might have died as a result of illness or complications of childbirth after the birth of their youngest child Henry. Walker Taliaferro moved from Caroline County, VA to Harrisburg, PA between 1880-1890. I'm actually not yet sure whether Nancy died in Virginia or in Pennsylvania.
