  Notes	Allegedly born in Lancaster County, his death certificate claims York County. Wherever he entered the world, he was the son of John & Elizabeth Sweeney. He married Eliza Ann Armstrong October 14, 1858, and fathered Malinda J. (b. 06/18/59), Eleda E. (b. 04/17/61), Lewis W. b. 09/09/63), Susan Alice (b. 03/02/71), Anne E. (b. 06/07/73), Mary M. (b. 03/02/74), Kate C. (b. 07/23/77), Louisa L. (b. 05/06/79), and Bertha P. (b. 12/13/85). In 1860, he was a farmer presumably living in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair, brown eyes, and a brown complexion. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia July 19, 1863, as a private with Co. H, 3rd U.S. Colored Troops. Promoted to corporal November 1, 1864, and to sergeant September 1, 1865, he honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865, at Jacksonville, Florida. His surname is spelled "Swiney" on the rolls. He lived in Lancaster County October 1865 - 1911 and worked as a barber but died at his home at 111 W. Princess St., York Borough, York County, from "chronic nephritis" with "chronic endocarditis" a contributing factor. February 11, 1834, is also reported as his date of birth.
