Notes |
- The Rev. Dr. William H. Marshall was born in Harrisburg on January 1, 1866 to Elisha B. Marshall and Harriet McClintock Marshall. At a young age, William showed an interest in the work of the church and became active in the Wesley AME Zion Church. He was one of the first two black males to graduate from a Harrisburg High School in 1883. In 1884, many prominent citizens petitioned the school board thereby requesting his appointment as a teacher, shortly thereafter Marshall began teaching at the Wickersham and Calder Buildings (teaching and serving as a principal for twenty-nine years where black children attended classes). In the Harrisburg School District's directory for the 1910-1911 school year identified William H. Marshall as Principal of Calder Building (Sixth Ward)).
On September 27, 1887 William married Mary Lillian Dennee, daughter of Harrisburg's ex-City Assessor Alexander W. Dennee and Frances Dennee and shortly after their marriage he was admitted to the ministry of the A. M. E. Zion Church and became associated with many churches in local communities including Middletown, Wrightsville, Mt. Holly, Newville, Lebanon Heights and Mechanicsburg. Early in the 1900's, he helped build the Harris AME Zion Church in West Harrisburg, which became an important and prosperous church in the community.
Rev. Dr. William H. Marshall being a well-known minister, writer and educator, and a leader in Harrisburg died at the age of fifty-one on Saturday March 18, 1916 in his home located at 629 Boas Street, Harrisburg, after an illness of nine months.
Dr. Marshall was survived by his mother Mrs. Harriet McClintock Marshall; his wife, Mrs. Mary Lillian Marshall; and three sons Dr. Alexander Leslie Marshall a prominent physician in the city, and Doctors William Elisha and Forrest Scott Marshall, both pharmacists, plus numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
Summer employment for William along with his brother-in-law Professor. Morris H. Layton was serving as mail clerks at the Grand Union Hotel, Saratoga Springs, NY for many years. At the time of his death, Dr. Marshall was a probation officer of the Big Brother movement of Dauphin County Courts; also as writer Dr. Marshall contributed to newspapers, particularly the Telegraph, the Patriot and Star of Zion, of Charlottesville, N. C., he also wrote for religious and educational publications.
