  Notes	From contributor: Dennis Brandt (47232334) • tbng@comcast.net ---- William was the son of John H. & Sarah White. In 1850 he was living with his family in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but is not found with certainty in the 1860 census. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Philadelphia June 30, 1863, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. B, 3rd U.S. Colored Troops, and promoted to corporal July 29, 1863. He honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865, at Jacksonville, Florida. He married the much younger Mary Jane White, but no children were found. At various times he worked as a cabinet maker, drayman, grocer, and janitor and in 1880 was living with Mary in Williamsport, Lycoming County. By 1900, they were residing in Harrisburg where he died from "general arteriosclerosis" and was a member of Stephens Post No. 520, G.A.R.
