  Notes	Although his death certificate claims he was born in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, his military records assert he was born across the Susquehanna River in York County. He married Ellen Brown, but she died ca. 1860. He is not found in the 1860 census. While there is a black John Bolier of similar age living in Wrightsville, that appears to be another man who was also a Civil War veteran. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-seven in Carlisle February 24, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day either there or in Philadelphia as a private with Co. D, 32nd U.S. Colored Troops. Hospitalized for "constitutional syphilis of long standing . . . contracted prior to enlistment" at Beaufort, South Carolina, to date August 31, 1864, he remained there until discharged the service by surgeon's certificate to date December 5, 1864. His compiled military service records spell his surname both "Bolyer" and "Bollyer," but he applied for his pension as "Boyer." He married Margaret Ellen Jones in October 1877, in Harrisburg, but no children were found. An examining surgeon found no evidence of a venereal disease in 1890 during his pension application process. Cause of his death is listed as "tuberculosis & atheromatous condition of blood vessels." His death certificate spells his surname "Boyer."
