  Notes	"The son of Jerry and Jane (Robinson) Miles, his whereabouts in 1860 are unknown, but he was a farmer and laborer by trade and stood 5' 2" tall with black hair, black eyes, and a black complexion. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia August 29, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 6th U.S. Colored Troops, promoted to corporal September 6, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company September 20, 1865, at Wilmington, North Carolina. He married Virginia-born Clara lnu. and fathered Clara J. (b. @1875 - married a Brown), Mary (b. @1883 - married a Massey), Walter (b. @1885), John M. (b. @1888), and Levi (b. @1890). [Married names are presumed from the 1910 census and are unverified.] He died from "chronic interstitial nephritis" with "tuberculosis pulmonary" a contributing factor at the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Asylum. He had already contracted both diseases when he entered the facility. His death certificate lists his first name as "Jiles," and he does not appear in a Dauphin County census until 1910.
