- A BOY DROWNED
Jacob Allen the First Victim This Year to Lose His Life In the River
Jacob Allen, son of Jacob Allen, the colored janitor at the executive department on Capitol hill, while standing on a pier in the Susquehanna late Saturday afternoon lost his balance, fell into the stream and was drowned before the eyes of a half dozen of his frightened playmates. As the day was warm the lad accompanied by some friends went across the old camel back bridge about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. They climbed down the broad sloping front of the fifth pier to go in swimming. Some of the boys thought the water too cold for bathing and before he removed his clothing, Jacob stooped over the side of the pier to try the temperature of the water. He lost his balance, fell into the swift current formed by the side of the pier and those OI tile People's bridge. The boys why were near tried to seize him, but one nearly fell the same way as Jacob did all they could do was to raise alarming cries. Alien was borne down the river rapidly and despite his struggles soon sank beneath the surface. A number of men who were notified by the boys rowed about the river near the railroad piers all of Saturday afternoon and yesterday, but could find no trace of the drowned lad. Yesterday afternoon a close search was made as far as Steelton, but the body was not found. It is thought by those familiar with the river that the current carried the body by the Stucker and Rosebud islands and that it is miles from the bridges. Coroner Krause was notified by the boy's father. He has offered ten dollars reward for the recovery of the body. Allen's father lives on Tanner's alley. He has been the janitor of the executive department at the state capitol since the Geary administration. His son was about 12 years old and was a pupil at the North street colored school.
