Notes |
- Mrs. Mary M. Jones, of Harrisburg
On Sunday morning, March 27th, 1887, Mrs. Mary M. Jones, widow of the late Dr. William Jones, passed away at her residence, No. 420 South Street, at the age of 90. Her illness was brief and, given her advanced age, soon culminated in her passing.
Mrs. Jones was born in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, and was raised in the family of General Ross. Sixty years ago, Dr. Jones, his wife, and two children made their journey to this city on a raft and settled here. In those early days, railroads were unknown in this area.
Mrs. Jones was the mother of eleven children, five sons and six daughters, all of whom have now passed away except for one son, Henry, and one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Steward. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as a long list of friends who mourn her loss.
Throughout her long life, Mrs. Jones had experiences filled with thrilling interest, and she was often requested to share stories of early times, including her first sight of Revolutionary soldiers, which her memory retained well.
She was a consistent member of Wesley Union Church, in which Dr. Jones served as a deacon, and she passed away in the hope of a blessed immortality.
The funeral will take place at Wesley Union Church on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Friends are invited to attend without further notice.
