- William E. Geary, Sr., 80, died on September 1, 2013.
A lifetime resident of Edgemont, Susquehanna Township, he graduated from Susquehanna Township High School in 1950. He graduated second in his class and played varsity football, basketball and ran varsity track. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and worked in New York City for a short time. Other than those times he lived in his beloved Edgemont. He attended Waupeton Community College in North Dakota, while posted there and Elizabethtown College after returning to Pennsylvania. He worked a variety of jobs, the most significant being at the Lebanon VA Hospital, and Bethlehem Steel pipe mill. He retired from there in 1998, after 31 years.
He was one of 10 children born of Anna (Miller) Geary and Joseph T. Geary, Sr. Of his siblings, Jeanne Geary Jackson, Russell T. Geary and Eleanor Geary Sloane ("Sis") died before him. Surviving him are Franklyn H. Geary and Faye Geary Lumpkin of Atlanta, Valerie Geary (Tootsie), George Leonard Geary (Lenny), Joseph T. Geary, Jr. (Tommy), and Bruce Geary (Bootsie), all of Harrisburg.
Also surviving are his wife of 20 years, Ellen K. Barry and children, Maria Geary (Jerome Scott) of Durham, NC, William E. Geary, Jr. of Steelton, three grandchildren, Corinne Geary, Bryant Letterlough and Lindsay Carter (Eric), five great-grandchildren and many beloved nephews and nieces. He was a member of American Legion Post 733 and a past member of the Edgemont Fire Company.
There are no services. He will be interred in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date. His family have invited friends to stop over at his house on Saturday, September 14, 2013 from 1pm - 6pm.
