The son of Charles & Abalena (Hess) Ramsey and apparent twin brother of Jacob B. Ramsey, in 1850 he was a laborer living with his family in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, where the family is listed as "Ramson." While not found in the 1860 census, he and Jacob are both in the 1863-65 draft registration still residing in East Hanover Township. Both men are listed there as "colored," and Jacob is in the 1900 census as "black" despite the fact that Jacob's military records describe him as having sandy hair and blue eyes. No physical description of John has yet been found.
An apparent Civil War veteran, the organization inscribed on the tombstone is poorly worded. There was a John Ramsey who served with Independent Battery A Pennsylvania Militia Artillery from ca. May 19, 1864, through ca. September 15, 1864, but it is not as yet 100% certain this refers to the subject of this post. That organization clearly was not an infantry company as claimed on the tombstone but an artillery battery with the state militia, and should not be confused with the federally mustered Independent Battery A Pennsylvania Light Artillery. The gravesite detail seen here previously claiming he was a POW has been removed because that event seems unlikely given the regiment in which he served.
He married the much younger Sarah Longreen or Lungreen and fathered the child linked below. Cause of his death is listed as "chronic interstitial nephritis" with "mitral regurgitation" a contributing factor. None of his obituaries makes reference to military service.
Both the 1870 census and death certificate for Jacob Ramsey indicate he was white, but John is in the 1880 census as "mulatto" while his death certificate lists him as "black."
