  Notes	LAST NEGRO SLAVE DIES IN COLUMBIA Columbia, Nov. 4-Daniel S. Offord, the last surviving slave in Columbia, died this morning at 6:55 o'clock at his home, No. 518 Alley N. Death was due to a complication of diseases after an illness of seven months. The deceased was seventy-one years old. He was born in slavery at Frederick, Md., of slave parents owned by Samuel Thomas. He was later sold to Samuel Detrow, of Frederick, from whom he purchased his freedom. He enlisted in a colored regiment during the Civil War. In 1872 he came to Columbia from Frederick and since resided here. A number of years ago Mr. Detrow, his former owner, visited Mr. Offord and was entertained at the latter's home. He was a good-natured colored man and was strictly honest. He was married in Columbia and his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Annie Dalton, of Coatesville, survive. One brother, Wilson Offord, of Baltimore, Md., also survives. He was a member of Zion A.M.E.
