Notes |
- Isaac Gordon was born in 1840 in Washington, Edgefield, South Carolina, USA. Isaac fought in the Civil War in the 24th United States Colored Troops. It is not clear when he moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but he became the cheif waiter at the Jones House and was a member of Brotherly Love Lodge No. 896 G.U.O. of O.F. He died on August 31, 1877, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at the age of 37, and was buried in Harris Free Cemetery, although his gravestone is now at Lincoln Cemetery in Penbrook, PA.
Sudden Death
A colored man, named Isaac Gordon, well known as the chief waiter at the Jones' house, was found dead in the yard of his residence, No. 131 Cowden street, about 11 o'clock last night. He was last seen alive about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
An examination of the body was made by a physician who gave it as his opinion that Gordon died from apoplexy, a supposition not confirmed by the verdict of the Coroner's jury which was that he had died of a valvular disease of the heart.
The deceased leaves a wife, but no children. He owned the house he lived in and was a much respected member of the fraternity of Odd fellows.

The funeral of Isaac Gordon, whose sudden death from a valvular disease of the heart was mentioned in last Saturday's Independent, took place from his late residence in Cowden street yesterday. and was largely attended by relatives and friends. His remains were entered in the Harris free Cemetery.

He married Priscilla lnu., but they reportedly had no children. He was found dead in the yard of his home, reportedly either from a stroke or a heart attack. At the time of his death, he worked as head waiter at Harrisburg's Jones House. His obituaries all spell his surname "Gordon." Per his obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent, he was buried in the Harris free cemetery. The widowed Priscilla married a Walker.
Given that not one available record spells his surname "Gordan," the spelling on the tombstone is suspect.
