  Notes	"His compiled military service mostly report Maryland as his birth place but on one occasion lists Virginia. A laborer by trade, he stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair, black eyes, and a black complexion. His whereabouts in 1860 are unknown, A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen as a substitute for John Hise and mustered into federal service at Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, sometime during September 1864 (his service records do not give a specific day) as a private with Co. H, 127th U. S. Colored Troops. He transferred to Co. A, date not stated in his service records, and spent time both as company and hospital cook. He honorably discharged with his company October 20, 1865, at Brazos Santiago, Cameron County, Texas. His service records list him as "Nick." He married Laura lnu. and fathered Sarah (b. 01/??/84 - married a Holmes). By 1900, he was living with his family in Steelton, Dauphin County. The 1900 census claims a birth date of February 1841."
