  Notes	Born into slavery in 1845 in Frederick County, Virginia, John Quincy Adams's early life was marked by the harrowing realities of bondage. His existence under the Calomese family was a daily testament to the cruel paradox of slavery: living at the mercy of others' whims, with no claim to the life he led. His childhood was overshadowed by the constant threat of separation from his family, a fear that materialized with the sale of his twin brother, Aaron, and his sister, Sallie. The Civil War era opened a door to hope and liberation. In 1862, amidst the chaos of war and the brief presence of Union General John W. Geary’s troops, John and his family seized their moment to escape. Their flight from Virginia to Pennsylvania was a daring leap towards freedom - a journey fraught with danger but driven by an unquenchable desire for liberty. In Pennsylvania, John embarked on a new chapter. He found employment in Harrisburg as a coachman for Judge Pearson, serving from 1868 until 1912. This period of his life was not just about survival; it was a testament to his resilience and ability to adapt to a new world of possibilities. John's commitment to his community and the broader cause of African American rights took shape in his role as an ordained minister in the A.M.E. Zion Church and as a founding member of the Colored Protective League of Harrisburg. His efforts to fight against segregation practices in Harrisburg's Grand Hotel spoke to his dedication to the cause of equality, even in the face of societal resistance. A poignant episode in John's life was the unexpected reunion with his brother Aaron. This reunion, though a joyful event, was also a reminder of the painful separations endured during slavery. The happiness of finding Aaron was tempered by the lingering sorrow for his sister Sallie, whose fate remained unknown. John's life intersected with the broader abolitionist movement, evident in his invitation to deliver a prayer at Harriet Tubman's memorial. Yet, despite these connections and contributions, John's story, like those of many African Americans of his era, faded into the background, underscoring the ongoing struggle for recognition and equality. John Quincy Adams passed away in 1917, his final resting place in Elmira lacking the acknowledgment deserving of his life's journey. His unmarked grave stands as a symbol of the obscurity that often shrouds the contributions of African Americans in the historical narrative.
