  Notes	According to his great granddaughter, Rosalind Gumby Bauchum, Reverend Elias Parker, aka Barkhurst, was born enslaved in Jefferson County, Maryland, to Elijah and Mary Parker. He was owned by Dr. William Nelson. According to the Carlisle Sentinel, June 15, 1886, "On Thursday last, at Mt. Holly, Rev. Elias Parker, colored, of Williamsport, was married to Miss Lucinda Johnson, colored, of Mt. Holly." At the time of his enlistment in the Civil War, he he was a laborer by trade and was described as standing 5' 10" tall with black hair, black eyes, and black complexion. Elias enlisted and mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, February 15, 1865, as a private with Co. I, 38th U.S. Colored Troops. He was detached for most of his service to the quartermaster department and discharged at Brazos de Santiago, Texas, with the army furnishing transportation only as far as New Orleans, Louisiana. He paid $.06 to keep his knapsack and canteen at discharge.
