- Hester Green was enslaved in Dauphin county just south of Harrisburg by a Mr. Wells. When she reached the age of 28 she obtained her freedom and moved to Duncan's Island.
A Former Slave
Death of an Aged Colored Woman, Formerly a Slave in Dauphin County

At five minutes before 8 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Hester Green, the aged colored woman who was so badly burned Monday last at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. T. B. Shorter, 1103 Sixteenth street, died of her injuries. She was over 90 years of age and was born on the eastern shore of Maryland. Until she was 28 years old she was a slave and lived on the estate of a Mr. Wells, below Harrisburg. She afterward lived on Duncan's Island, a short distance above that city, and was there when the Pennsylvania canal was being built. Afterward, about the year 1844, she removed to Bellefonte and there resided until three years ago when she came to this city and made her home with her daughter at whose house the accident took place. She had been blind the past four years. Mrs. Green was married in 1830, and five children survive her death. These are Mary, wife of T. B. Shorter, and Mrs. Savra Worley, of Altoona; Mrs. Julia Fry, of Harrisburg, and Charles and William Green, of Bellefonte. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
