  Notes	Ellen Marshall wife of Henry Marshall was born February 28, 1834 and died June 16, 1887 at the age of age 53 years. Ellen followed in her husband’s path as a proprietor in 1883 and opened her own establishment with a full supply of the best brands of smoking and chewing tobaccos, the store was located at Fourth and South Streets with the title of "TOBACCONIST", and she frequently advertised in the daily black newspaper “The State Journal". Ellen, her husband, and son frequently attended elegant social events in the black community. At one event Mrs. Marshall’was described as handsomely and boomingly attired in black silk and velvet lace, sleeves slightly flowing, and pannier with diamonds and pearls; at another elegant event her attire was described as a green cashmere richly embroidered with India lace trimmed with pearl ornaments and natural flowers Ellen was described as an honest person, a Christian with a philanthropic existence and very valuable to society, beneficial to the poor and a friend to strangers in distress. She leaves behind her husband Henry Marshall and only son John G. B. Marshall and a host nieces/nephews and in-laws. A host of friends and relatives paid their last respects to Mrs. Ellen Marshall at the Wesley Union church and she was laid to rest in Lincoln Cemetery
