    Notes:

HOW TO LIVE WITHOUT WORK. AN EVENING OF ORATORY AT SHAKESPEARE HAM.. Daniel Mailer Delivers a Iectnre and is Presented With a Cat, Rabbit, a Large Bouquet, a Backet of Water and Fifty Dollars In Solid, Hard Cash Laughable Incidents. When Daniel Haller, the distinguished colored lecturer, looking grand, gloomy and peculiar, stalked down the aisle in Shakespeare Hall last night he found assembled an audience of at least three hundred people, each of whom had paid twenty - five cents to hear him deliver his great lecture on "How to Live Without Work." Mr. Haller was gotten up for the occasion. On his head was a shiny plug hat a white vest begirt his rotund form; black trousers and coat and white overgaiters, a broad expanse of shirt bosom topped with a red necktie and a large diamond pin, and a cotton umbrella under diamond m his arm, completed a tout ensemoie that was at once rich and gorgeous and led some of the audience to re fer to a story concerning Solomon and the lilv. Mr. Haller mounted the stage, took off his hat and removed from it a large bandana with which he mopped his forehead. As he did so he was greeted with a volley of torpedoes and a shower of beans that caused him some astonishment. He asked the audience to help sing a hymn which was good naturedly agreed to, and a colored man in the room started a tune. During its progress the notes were punctuated with torpedoes, and a cat chorus was kept np. When the last notes of the tune had died away and another volley of torpedoes was fired and another shower of beans fell on the lecturer, Mr. Haller said he proposed to say something about his life. "Is your education doing you any good ?" he asked. "Give it up," answered the audience. "Some of you may have had mothers," remarked the lecturer further on, and the audience shouted. "I was raised in the South and worked on a farm off and on," he said, and the audience intimated that he worked more off than on. "I was there from the time I commenced until I stopped, and thank the Lord I'm here to - day." At this juncture two of the audience, amidst wild cheering, marched np to the stage and presented the orator with a cat and a rabbit which were tied to the stage. The cat backed off from Dan while the rabbit eyed him curiously and evidently wanted to get at the gorgeous rose in his button hole. "Uan any gen tleman tell me which is which ?" asked the lecturer when the laugh ter had subsided. "I would like to kuow what my surroundings means." Then he stood back and looked at the audience in a dignified way that caused wild applause. At this point George Adams advanced to the stage and on behalf of Col. William B. Till presented the lecturer with a huge bouquet of peonies, lettuce and onions with a colored tissue paper handle. On a card attached to the bouquet was the inscription : "Col. Dan Haller, Shot Gun Wrestler, Tom Cat Juggler, Rabbit Manipulator and Language Slinger. " As the orator reached down to take the bonquet Abe Brecken - maker's white bull - dog, which was enjoying the evening in his quiet way, saw the rabbit on the stage for the first time. Quick as a flash he ran np the main aisle, grabbed the rabbit by the neck, and was about to chew it when his owner dragged him off the stage and the rabbit was unharmed. As the dog left the stage Dan came from behind the table where he had been hiding and assisted in the canine's departure. The ex citement caused by the mj terrup - tion was something perfectly KjiVi n d e - scnbable, and did not sub C f side tor some time. When quiet w was restored Mr. Haller took up the thread of his lecture and told how he came to Pennsylvania to work. "Yon never worked, " said a voice. "Wh - a - a - t!" said Mr. Haller; the man that says that never did a day's work." This was greeted with cries of "Rats," and "Oh, go on with your lecture." Then the orator explained "the great seal on the treaty between General Washington and (ieneral Ulucher, an ex ceedingly astonishing explanation that sur prised the historians present As the lecturer proceeded he asked nis audience: "JJiu you give every man his rights?" "Ses," shouted the audience in chorus, "liow did you give it to him?" asked Dan. "In the neck," was the answer, followed by wild laughter. Dan p jumped up and down on the stage r I and shouted "You never did." "Take J care, Dan, you'll tramp on the rab - bit," said a voice. "The rabbit's got to look out for me,"iaid the orator, and there was more cheering. "When you called a man out to fight what did yon give him ?" asked Dan. The audience answered with a volley of torpedoes. "Justice has been running for years and he'll get it" said the orator. "What's he running for ?" asked the audience. "Well, he'll get it What's he going to get ?" asked Dan. and the audience said the probabilities were he would get 60 days in jail. Then the lecturer informed his audience that "There is a peojle beyond contradictory to - day that lives without toil. .Point me out in any other direction that that ain't so. Your forefathers amalgamated and mnrdered us. We didn't want to come. If a black man did steal chickens he never got what belonged to him. 1 his remark started the laughing again. The lecturer then told how he ran away from the South and near Frederick, Md., he got up on a fence and gave three whoops that could be heard four miles. Give em to us now, Dan, voiced the audi ence, and the lecturer opened his mouth and let out three unearthly screeches. "That's the way I did it" he said, "and my girl heard me and said 'There's Dan Haller going to Pennsylvania.' She's living to - day and can testify to it" The lecturer then told how he shot the cat for a rabbit and paid his respects to council men, who, he said, fonght for a position to which there is no salary. "There must be a steal somewhere, he said He in - dignantly spurned the insinuation that he was lazy anu said he knew some white people who were "too lazy to mind the flies off their backs." Then he invited a reporter to come up and inspect his garments and see if he didn t have more than one suspender. Mr. Haller said he was opposed to free trade which would kill Pennsylvania on her feet. At this point he took of his coat and branched off to the question of the sun's "If the earth revolves and the sun moving. stands still, why did Joshua ask the Lord to stop the sun until he achieved the victory ? If the earth is round, why is' there an anel at each corner ? The Bible says it Is square " At this point a winaow in the rear of the lecturer was opened and a bucket of water fell on him. That broke up the lecture, anil the audience crowded about the orator and aior ana congratulated him. He was then taken home, but managed to get out to - day on crutches. Mr. Haller is $50 richer by bis lecture, and it is said he cither proposes making a, tour of the watering places this summer or else going back to Maryland to see his girl.
