    A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Readville, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, April 8, 1863, mustered into federal service there April 23 as a corporal with Co. F, 54th Massachusetts Infantry, and promoted to sergeant August 14, 1864. Wounded in the left thigh during fighting at Boykins Mill, South Carolina, he was hospitalized at Beaufort, South Carolina, and discharged by surgeon's certificate to date June 8, 1865.

    The night janitor at the Harrisburg post office for the final fifteen years of his life, he died at his home. He had been a member of Stephens Post No. 520, G.A.R., that served his funeral."
