    "The funeral of Cassius M. Brown, Sr., aged 77, a leader among the negro race in this city for half a century and one time publisher and associate editor of Our National Progress, who died early this morning, will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home, 267 Briggs Street. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Beverly Ward, pastor of the Capital Street Presbyterian Church. Burial will be made in the Lincoln Cemetery.

    Mr. Brown was born in Harrisburg, September 17, 1844. He was the son of Thomas and Wilhelmina Brown, who came to Harrisburg in 1837. He learned the barber trade in 1858 at Lewistown and opened business at Harrisburg on May 3, 1861, at Camp Curtin. On April 1, 1862, he opened a shop in the old United States Hotel and continued business there thirty years. During part of this time he was engaged as publisher and associate editor of Our National Progress.

    Mr. Brown served as assistant sergeant-at-arms of the Constitutional Convention of Pennsylvania, 1872-1874. He was also a member of the Common Council of Harrisburg, 1890-1894.

    He was a charter member of the Capital Street Presbyterian Church and was connected with the Sunday school since its organization in 1855. In 1876 he was elected assistant superintendent, which office he held for 36 years. He became superintendent in 1912 and in 1918 was elected superintendent emeritus because of enfeebled health. He was ruling elder and clerk of the session since 1878. In 1896 he was elected commissioner to the general assembly at Carlisle.

    In 1865 he married (Amanda) Cornelia Gray, of York, who survives him, with the following children: Richard S. and Howard D. Brown, of Seattle, Wash.; C. Sumner Brown, of Davenport Iowa; Mrs. David A. Jenkins, Miss Ida E. Brown and Cassius M. Brown. Jr., of this city. "
