Radical History Reclamation Demo: Black Family History Needs Light
Everyday I learn a little more about all of the things we can’t see without light… This is especially true when it comes to history. Everything that has been shut away in forgotten drawers, missed in dismal attic corners, and especially those things that have been forcefully oppressed, pushed down into the ground—just needs a bit of light to be seen again! This is the only way to recover our family history from the places where it was hidden. This is particularly true in our segregated historically Black Cemeteries… So, let’s keep bringing Black Genealogy into the light. Cause Black Family History needs some light…We all look better in the light!

Black Family Radical History Reclamation Happens in Black Cemeteries
- How Cemeteries Help Us Find Our Ancestors:
- Cemeteries can reveal family connections that were formed before the end of slavery.
- Some gravestones record an ancestor’s exact place of birth, not just their birth state.
- Sometimes a headstone indicates the names of a person’s parents and spouse.
- Gravestones can give you exact birth and death dates.
- Gravestones are sometimes inscribed with an epitaph that tells you about a person’s achievements, affiliations, or personality.
