Burial Records
Lincoln Cemetery Burial Records
An example of two types of Harrisburg Lincoln Cemetery Burial Records that were digitized by SOAL: SavingOurAncestorsLegacy volunteers in 2021. Some of the other types include handwritten notebooks, family plot maps, record of payment, account ledgers, burial records compiled from funeral homes, and handwritten records of headstone inscriptions, location, and condition.
Lincoln Cemetery Burial Record Type: (Card Catalog Filing System)
Each Burial Record consists of at least one Burial Record Card. The Burial Record Card is a 3×5 index card, with a handwritten record on at least one side, containing the name and date of the individual buried. The Burial Record Card may also include: A handwritten record on the Burial Record Card-Front containing Date of Death and/or Date of Burial, Last Known Address, Next Of Kin, Family Contact Information, Funeral Director, Burial Location: Block, Section, Lot, Plot/Grave indicating the location of the burial according to the system indicated on the Lincoln Cemetery Block Maps, Notes on any Difficulties Encountered during the burial, Conflicting Data on Burial Location, cost of burial, Name of Lot Owner. The Burial Record Card-Back may include additional handwritten Notes, and/or a small Hand-Drawn Diagram or Map containing the names and relative locations of individuals buried in the surrounding graves. An Individual Burial Record may also include various items that were stapled to the Burial Record Card: Obituary, or Death Notice; Permit for the Burial or Other Disposition of a Dead Human Body; Permission to Open A Grave on Lot (signed by Lot Owner).
Our Digitization Process:
During the scanning process, the exact order Burial Records were found in, was maintained by the digitization team. Scans were made in the TIFF format and converted to JPEG, file names were maintained on conversion. The JPEG file names (batch_scan number) were then appended with the name of the individual (Surname-Title Given Names Suffix), exactly as it appears on the Burial Record Card-Front (unless the handwriting was illegible, in which case, a legible option was used). (However, I am not sure that Facebook has maintained this order when I uploaded the images… this may cause confusion with front and back or records, obituaries, etc.) All Lincoln Cemetery Records were digitized by SavingOurAncestorsLegacy Volunteers in 2021. Original Lincoln Cemetery Burial Records are stored at Wesley Union AME Zion Church (5th & Camp street, Harrisburg, PA 17110; 717-232-4918), in card catalog boxes.
